The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published data on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome based on the National Health Interview Survey. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, also called Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS), is an ill-understood and often-disabling condition that includes fatigue not relieved by rest, brain fog, and a host of other symptoms. ME/CFS often follows a viral infection, and many cases of Long COVID are likely ME/CFS.
Implications for employers:
- The incidence of this condition can help employers anticipate the needs of this population.
- ME/CFS, including Long COVID, can be a disability under the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) if it substantially limits life activities. If so, employers must make reasonable accommodations to allow them to continue to perform their essential functions.
- Some employees could be eligible for unpaid leave as an accommodation under ADA. The ADA requires that employers review each employee’s circumstances individually.
- Employers can train supervisors to recognize symptoms of ME/CFS and Long COVID and to empathetically treat those who are suffering.
