Jeff - interesting observations this week. Question for the GLP-1 finding - is it the drug that had the effect or the weight loss that had the effect on knee pain. The way you worded the comments if

Would appear the drug has an effect on the joint to reduce pain. But isn’t the reduced knee pain the result of the weight loss - which could occur with better eating habits

Hi Jeanne, and thanks for the comment. In general, the clinical experience is that since obesity is a metabolic disease people are very unlikely to have high amounts of weight loss from dietary or lifestyle changes -whereas bariatric surgery and GLP-1s both are very effective at promoting weight loss.

An interesting thing about GLP-1 drugs is that some of the benefits (like fewer heart attacks) start pretty early -often before maximal weight loss. These drugs might have anti-inflammatory properties in addition to promoting weight loss. In this study, the timeframe of weight loss and decrease in pain score was pretty similar - making it more likely thatthe weight loss is the cause of improved pain.

Hope you have a nice holiday!
